Start with the battery, because it's the part cold affects most. Vape batteries are lithium cells, and lithium cells release energy through a chemical reaction. Cold slows that reaction down. The battery still holds its charge, but it can't deliver it as easily, so the device feels weak, cuts out, or shows a lower reading than it should.
The important point is that this is usually temporary. A device that seems nearly flat after an hour on a snowmobile or in a cold truck will often recover once it warms back up to room temperature. Before assuming a battery is worn out, let it warm up and check again.
Charging is where cold matters most. Don't plug in a device that's still ice-cold. Lithium cells charge poorly below freezing, and charging them cold isn't good for them. Bring the device indoors, give it time to reach room temperature, then charge it.
Next, the e-liquid. Most e-liquid is a blend of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin, and both thicken as they cool. Vegetable glycerin in particular turns syrupy in the cold. Thick liquid wicks slowly into the coil, and a coil that fires before the wick has caught up can produce a dry, harsh, or slightly burnt puff.
That's why the first few puffs from a cold device can taste off. The fix is simple: warm the device in your hand or an inside pocket for a minute before using it, and take a slower, gentler draw at first.

A few winter habits make the biggest difference.
Carry it in an inside pocket. Body heat keeps the battery and liquid closer to room temperature than an outside pocket or a bag ever will.
Never leave a device in a vehicle overnight between November and March. It will be well below freezing by morning.
Keep a spare indoors. If your main device is struggling in the cold, a room-temperature spare will work straight away.
Check for condensation. Bringing a very cold device into a warm room can cause moisture to form. Let it sit and dry for a few minutes before charging.
Spring and fall can catch people out as well. A device left in a truck on a mild afternoon can drop well below freezing overnight, and the first cold morning of the season is often when people discover the problem.
Summer brings the opposite problem. Heat, especially a device left on a dashboard in direct sun, can overheat a battery and thin the e-liquid enough to leak. Shade and room temperature suit a vape best in every season.
If you spend time at the campground or on the river in summer, keep your device in a shaded bag rather than on a picnic table or a boat seat.
